A 47-year-old man was reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen at the Clairwood Hospital in Mobeni where he was actually treating a gunshot wound.

It was gathered that the suspect allegedly entered the hospital premises around 18:30  and approached the gate where the securities of the hospital refused them to enter.

They threatened the securities with a gun and made their way in, they went straight to the male surgical ward where the victim is said to be receiving treatment according to police spokesperson Cpt Nqobile Gwala.

The victim, a foreign national was shot in the head and died instantly, he was killed in an execution-style fatal shooting, the KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu alleges.

“It is alleged that… two unknown armed men stormed past hospital security guards and proceeded to locate the man in his bed, and shot him in the head at point-blank range in full view of other patients and hospital staff,” Simelane-Zulu stated.

The victim was said to be transferred from the King Edward VII Hospital where he was formerly rushed to on December 23 to Clairwood Hospital where he was killed on Friday.

“Although it is not always possible to predict an incident of this nature, which appears well planned, the fact that these perpetrators were able to escape without getting apprehended by security or law enforcement does call into question our preparedness, as a department, to react effectively to such acts,” Simelane-Zulu added.

The Durban police have launched a manhunt for the suspects urging anyone with information that could lead to their arrest to approach the nearest police station or contact Crime Stop.
